THE WATCH HOUSE, LITTLESTONE, KENT

The Watch House is a beautifully renovated historic building with a generous contemporary extension over three floors. It sits on the beach fronting the English Channel with extensive sea views.
The house lies on sloping ground at the rear of a natural sand/pebble embankment. A combination of shallow soils and the harsh marine environment represented a challenge for providing the clients sheltered and functional garden spaces with attractive material finishes and planting mixes.
The solution used the sloping site to create a tiered garden offering increasing amounts of protection and opportunity for more diverse planting. Materials were influenced by the coastal environment, using gravels, natural sandstones, granite, and paddlestone walling.
At the lower level a natural pool becomes the focus of the garden and integrates seamlessly into the landscape, offering year round swimming and enjoyment.
Completed December 2011.
