The overall objective was to achieve a ‘sense of place’ by designing a robust community orientated neighbourhood and a high quality urban environment with liveable streets that people aspire to reside in and where social interaction is promoted. The design takes forward the principles of shared surfaces for traffic and pedestrians, and hierarchy of spaces for legibility.

Key principles included:
Sustainability through place-making & community
Materials reflective of the conservation area character
Planting to enhance the image of the development, deciduous trees to provide shade and maximise solar gain in winter, biodiversity and ecological enhancement, trees as focal features to enhance legibility
SUDs measures through the use of permeable paving, gravel, and soft landscaped areas, and the capture of rainwater by water butts that can then be used by the residents for watering their gardens.
Lighting proposals to provide a well-lit and safe environment for the residents, and to enhance the evening and night-time ambience to reinforce a ‘sense of place’ and a quality environment.

markhantonStudio were appointed to carry out RIBA work stages A-F, from concept scheme to production information, acting in a co-ordination role for the whole of the external works.

The scheme was completed in late 2011.
