RENDEZVOUS SITE, MARGATE

markhantonStudio were appointed by CTM Architects to prepare concept proposals for the public and private realm works associated with a large mixed-use development on Margate sea-front, for a two stage tendering bid by Gleeson Homes Ltd.

The design looked to optimize the waterfront access and views, provide an exciting and vibrant public realm and quality destination around the new buildings. It sorts to create a distinctive character to the development, yet sympathetically integrated to the form the fabric and historic character of Margate.
The core feature to the scheme is a sweeping staircase that follows the natural curvature of the cliff to draw visitors down to the waterfront whilst opening up a vista to Margate bay. Users would be able to congregate on the stairs and sit on vibrant coloured stone chairs, a contemporary twist on the traditional deck chair.
Clear forms and lines are used to articulate the design in order to keep the openness of the space whilst suggesting pedestrian circulation and defining public and private areas. Throughout the design, materials would reflect and enhance the existing character of the sites environment.

Gleeson’s were successfully chosen as the preferred developer.
