FOLKESTONE HARBOUR SQUARE, KENT

markhantonStudio were appointed to provide concept designs through to technical drawings packages for an important historic urban square in the harbour area of Folkestone.

Having identified the historical importance of this site as the origins of the town settlement at the mouth of a valley eroded by the ‘Pent Stream’, we sort to provide conceptual design responses that revealed this historical association through contemporary features. The solution was an interactive fountain display within a new square, enhanced by a palette of coastal influenced paving materials, new bench seating with integral cycle parking, and a raised platform stage area for events.

The scheme was completed in 2011 and is proving to be one of the most exciting visitor attractions in the town.

Shortlisted for the Kent Design Awards 2012
